A New Fountain Grass; Pennisetum Black Arrow

The large flowers of Pennisetum Black Arrow seem to light up with the first rays of early morning sunshine.

Pennisetum Black Arrow is a brand new Fountain Grass from Knoll Gardens and is a selection from our trials of Pennisetum alopecuroides seedlings. It is named for its impressive heads of large, cylindrical, dark and fluffy flowers that have a distinctively tapered, arrow like tip and which appear in great quantity from rounded mounds of bright green foliage during high summer onwards.

When covered in early morning dew the flowers can appear to be almost black.

As with other Knoll Gardens selections Pennisetum Black Arrow has been undergoing trials both in the garden and on the nursery for some years. It has proved itself to be a highly attractive, healthy and reliable performer, and so we are delighted to now offer it for sale to UK gardeners.

The massed flowers of Pennisetum Black Arrow make a fabulous display even when being grown on the nursery.
In our recently replanted Dragon Garden the resident dragon appears to float above a bed of Pennisetum Black Arrow.

Like all fountain grasses, Pennisetum Black Arrow is happiest in a full sun position with average to dry soils. It is long lived and trouble free but can benefit from an occasional division if and when needed. Pennisetum Black Arrow is deciduous and will retain its shape for the winter, only requiring the old foliage to be cut to the ground each spring once the worst of the winter weather is past.

Masses of soft fluffy flowers are very textural and soft to the touch.
Pennisetum Black Arrow was selected for its masses of fluffy pointed flowers that seem especially large when covered in morning dew.
Even a coating of frost seems only to enhance the masses of flowers from Pennisetum Black Arrow.
