The Gravel Garden at Knoll

The bottom half of the garden at Knoll has such a sandy free draining soil that prior to it becoming a garden in the late 1960’s it was used for growing carrots for many years.

The area that the Gravel Garden now occupies was just lawn grass during the early years of the garden. During the later 1990’s it was decided to make a gravel garden in the most dry and drought prone section of what is now known as the Lower Lawn. Such was the success of the original gravel garden that several additions have since been made so that the Gravel Garden today stretches from the Holly Walk down to the Sunny Meadow.

This gallery is intended to show something of its development over the years, and also how it changes and performs during the course of a single season.
