Miscanthus Sunset is a new release for Autumn 2024 from Knoll Gardens and is an elegant selection from our trials of Miscanthus transmorrisonensis. Named for its tall stems and gently drooping flowers in varying shades of soft satin pink that are held high above the foliage to give a light and airy appearance in spite of its height. The silver ribbed green foliage gradually turning a deepening mix of oranges and reds as the autumn draws to a close. Miscanthus Sunset grows to a height of 1.8 to 2.1metres.
As with other Knoll Gardens selections Miscanthus Sunset has been undergoing trials both in the garden and on the nursery for some years. As a species Miscanthus transmorrisonensis is rather different in shape and habit from the more frequently seen Miscanthus sinensis and its popular garden selections. While very beautiful Miscanthus transmorrisonensis can also be rather variable in character and garden performance, and so we are delighted to be able to offer Miscanthus Sunset which has proved itself to be both highly attractive and a reliable performer.
Miscanthus Sunset can be seen as a generous drift at the bottom of the Long Walk borders and also opposite as part of the Decennium border. It works easily as a drift or group in borders but is equally effective as a single plant or in a large pot or container.
Like all miscanthus, Miscanthus Sunset is happiest in a full sun position in a range of soils which are not too winter wet. It is a long lived and trouble free deciduous grass that will retain its shape for the winter, only requiring the old foliage to be cut to the ground each spring once the worst of the winter weather is past.
