The Man Behind Knoll Gardens

Neil Lucas, M.I.Hort, is the UK’s leading ornamental grass specialist, owner of Dorset-based Knoll Gardens, RHS Council Member, judge, author, and holder of ten consecutive Gold Medals at Chelsea.

When not on the show circuit, either as Exhibitor or Judge, lecturing, writing, or off on plant hunting expeditions overseas, Neil spends his time tending what he NeilKneelingdescribes as his “four acre exhibit’, the show gardens and nursery at Knoll.

Author

A passionate plantsman, Neil’s first book, ‘Designing with Grasses’ was published to great acclaim. A truly practical guide, amongst many glowing reviews RHS journal The Garden said Neil’s… ”knowledge combined with technical advice and great photography make this an inspirational book suitable for all keen gardeners.”

Horticultural adviser

With a horticultural background stretching back many years, Neil is also a hands-on enthusiast, offering a personal, practical, garden consultancy service to help you bring Knoll’s ‘wow factor’ to your own garden. Recent projects range from intimate courtyard gardens to large public landscapes and all things in between.

Lecturer

An accomplished and enthusiastic writer and speaker, Neil is currently offering a choice of four lecture topics covering different aspects of his work at Knoll Gardens. His keynote lecture concentrates on his ‘specialist subject’, his passion for grasses and their ability to work superbly across all areas of the designed landscape. Additional topics include an insight into the rare and unusual trees and shrubs that form the backbone of Knoll Gardens; a personal perspective bringing together cultural information and anecdotes to create a comprehensive picture of Neil and his work; and a look at gardening the American way, with superb illustrations from Neil’s plant hunting travels.

All lectures feature Neil’s own, stunning photography and combine his particular gardening philosophy with his obvious passion, providing an up-to-date and informative portrait of a dedicated plantsman and his work.
