Events and Classes

Discover and Learn

Our 2026 events programme provides opportunities to learn more about grasses and how they can work so well in our gardens – along with understanding more about our naturalistic style and a chance to enjoy some of the gardens wildlife.

Some events are organised on behalf of our associated charity, the Knoll Gardens Foundation (Reg Charity 1159390), while Neil Lucas leads the masterclasses in the garden. As the UK’s leading authority on ornamental grasses, Neil can also be found speaking and lecturing across the UK and overseas.

April Events

Stourton Caundle Garden Club

Stourton Caundle Garden Club

At the invitation of the Stourton Caundle Garden Club Neil presents his lecture 'More Wow and Less Work; grasses and their place in our gardens'.

Discover more about Neil’s specialist subject in his keynote lecture as he explores the use of grasses in our designed spaces. From the naturalistic style of meadows and prairies to rain gardens and alternative lawns, grasses offer environmentally conscious gardeners an enticing mix of nature friendly informal design and easy maintenance. Combining cultural information with Neil’s personal gardening philosophy, this brings the story of his work and developments at Knoll Gardens right up-to-date.

Hardington Garden Club

Hardington Garden Club

At the invitation of the Hardington Garden Club Neil presents his lecture 'Using Perennials in the Modern Garden'.

Whatever your style of gardening – Naturalistic, Meadow, Prairie, Formal, traditional or Cottage Garden – perennial plants or ‘forbs’ will have a major role to play. Tactile grasses provide movement and lithe beauty while perennials provide wow factor colour and vital food for countless pollinating insects. Together they form a near perfect partnership. In this presentation Neil takes a look at some of his favourite perennial plants and their uses in both his own garden and elsewhere.

Naturalistic and Nature Friendly; A garden workshop

Naturalistic and Nature Friendly; A garden workshop

Organised by the Knoll Gardens Foundation (Reg Charity no;1159390) and centred around a tour of the garden this is the first of a series of occasional workshops (to be held across the seasons), focussing on our naturalistic approach to the garden at Knoll and the wildlife that it encourages.

‘Right Plant, Right, Place’, ‘Diversity of Habitat’ and ‘Nature Tolerant’, are all key elements of the naturalistic ethos and this workshop will explore some of the key themes that go to make Knoll the respected naturalistic garden that it has become.

Led by Neil Lucas (Knoll Gardens), Rowena Jecock (Charity Chair and Bumblebee surveyor) and Mitch Perkins (Charity Wildlife Survey Coordinator) attendees will learn how the charity’s wildlife and plant survey work helps guide and inform our ongoing care of the garden. Places are limited and there will be ample opportunity for attendees to ask questions of our experts.

All proceeds go toward supporting the work of our charity.

Grass Masterclass – with Neil Lucas

Grass Masterclass – with Neil Lucas

Grasses and their allies are a huge group of plants, offering a range of unique qualities that make them such versatile, practical, and yet easy care and beautiful additions to our gardens and designed spaces.

Renowned for his expertise on grasses and their use in our designed spaces, join Neil Lucas for an afternoon (from 2pm to 4.30pm), centred around a tour of the garden as he imparts something of his knowledge and experience gained during his 30 years of living and working at Knoll. Neil will show how grasses are an essential part of the naturalistic and wildlife friendly ethos and approach to garden making,  which has made Knoll the respected garden that it is today. Whatever your experience level learn how to choose, use and care for them, and see just how valuable grasses can be for todays gardens and the wider environment.

This is a stand alone class suitable for private gardeners and trade professionals.

To obtain special RHS MEMBERS PRICE of £44 please contact the nursery direct and quote membership number.
